Gambiaj.com – (BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau) The Inclusive Patriotic Alliance Cabas Garande (API CG), a coalition comprising MADEM G15, the PRS, FREPASNA, and APU-PDGB, has introduced plans to prepare a preferred march on November 15 to “rescue the country and democracy,” following a collection of controversial political developments in Guinea-Bissau.
The coalition’s resolution, made throughout a press convention on Sunday, was a direct response to current actions by the federal government and the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau, which they declare have undermined democratic processes within the nation.
Fidélis Forbs, the interim coordinator of MADEM G15, spoke passionately in regards to the deteriorating political scenario, asserting that their motion is dedicated to peace and dialogue however warned that the federal government’s actions may power them into road protests.
“We are the defenders of the peace of dialogue; therefore, we call for the Guinean people, especially political actors, to act responsibly,” Forbs stated. “If things continue down this path, we will make a popular march to rescue our country, even in the face of tear gas.”
The name for protests follows the announcement on November 1 by the federal government, citing “technical conditions” as the explanation for suspending the legislative elections initially scheduled for November 24. President Umaro Sissoco Embaló’s subsequent assertion confirmed the postponement, with no new date set for the elections, additional intensifying issues over the nation’s political stability.
The political disaster deepened on November 4, when the PR issued a decree repealing the earlier decree that set the election date. The scenario worsened with a ruling from the Supreme Court of Justice (STJ), which ordered the API CG, underneath the coordination of Braima Camará and Fernando Dias of the PRS, to resign their membership from their respective events. In one other contentious resolution, the courtroom prohibited the API CG from collaborating within the postponed legislative elections.
